Sarwar A. Kashmeri

American foreign policy toward Europe is merrily rolling along the path of least resistance, in the belief that there is nothing really amiss with the European-American relationship that multilateralism will not fix. Not true, argues Kashmeri. The alliance is dead, cannot be fixed, and must be renegotiated. It has not grown to accommodate Europe's emergence as a major power. A kind of United States of Europe, with foreign priorities different from those of the United States, has arrived at America's doorstep. Charles R. Figley

Sleeplessness, depression, anxiety... these are common symptoms of the burnout that often accompanies living with a loved one who has experienced some kind of traumatic stress. It's well known that the loss of a child, a life-threatening injury, sexual assault or combat experience can affect the victim in traumatic ways, but what's often overlooked is how this trauma affects those closest to the victim - the family. Burnout in Families focuses on the emotional vulnerability of families exposed to the chronic or acute stress of one of its members. Editor Charles R. Figley brings together seven psychologists from around the United States to take a closer look at what's now known as secondary traumatic stress disorder - the burnout that occurs when family members care for or just live with other family members who have undergone a traumatic life event. The authors provide a comprehensive review of the available literature and offer solutions for treating and preventing family burnout and the marital and family discord that inevitably follows.

Code Red in the Boardroom: Crisis Management as Organizational DNA

Code Red in the Boardroom: Crisis Management as Organizational DNA

W. Timothy Coombs

Even several years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, many organizations are ill-prepared to deal with crises, often opting to deal with them only after the fact. In Code Red in the Boardroom, Tim Coombs argues that crisis management should be a variety of activities that the organization performs daily to prevent crises from occurring. He defines the types of crises an organization might experience (both internal and external), draws from a wide variety of case examples, and showcases cutting-edge techniques that are being tested in the public and private sectors to demonstrate how crisis management can be "hardwired" into the corporate DNA, so that sensing, preventing, and responding quickly to crises become everyone's responsibility. In the process, he explores evolving roles for executives, managers, and front-line employees in communicating and implementing crisis plans. Ultimately, the book shows readers how proactive crisis management makes the company stronger, more resilient, and adaptable to change. A glossary of key terms and templates for establishing a crisis management program make this book an essential resource for all organizations.

Collateral Damage: The Psychological Consequences of America's War on Terrorism

Collateral Damage: The Psychological Consequences of America's War on Terrorism

Edited by Paul R. Kimmel and Chris E. Stout

Color-coded terrorism "alerts" are issued, then "lifted" with no explanation. False alarms can, like crying wolf, desensitize people to a real need to be on alert. And that psychic numbing is just one effect discussed in this book by fifteen psychologists teamed up to take a critical look at the U.S. war on terrorism. These experts are led by the Chairman of an American Psychological Association task force charged with pinpointing the effect of our anti-terrorism efforts on American mental health. Together, they present the most up-to-date and intriguing picture we have of the fallout on our own people from our own programs. The text spotlights stereotyping of foreigners, increased domestic hate crimes, fear, depression and helplessness, as well as increased militancy and belligerence, especially among students. Perhaps most disturbing in the "land of the free," we also see increasing acceptance of restrictions on our personal freedoms, and acceptance of human rights violations.

Crisis Intervention and Trauma Response are short term, problem-oriented, therapeutic interventions whose goal is to produce constructive change in the life situation of the client as quickly and directly as possible. Written in a lively and informative style, the authors present their successful General Crisis Response model for intervention. Using real life case examples, the authors encourage therapists to focus on clients' inner strengths rather than on pathologies that need to be "fixed," to help clients (like James G.) cope. The book is filled with exercises to develop techniques for building verbal and non-verbal skills, awareness of individual and cultural differences, and much more. A Crisis and Trauma Assessment checklist is included for effective therapeutic interventions, whether in your office or at a trauma site. The authors' down-to-earth approach to this topic will appeal to crisis intervention professionals as well as teachers and students.

Crisis Leadership : Planning for the Unthinkable

Crisis Leadership : Planning for the Unthinkable

Ian Mitroff

From product defects to environmental disasters—almost every day a new corporate crisis hits the headlines. In the majority of cases the results are disastrous: costly and time-consuming efforts to establish a positive public image can be wiped out in seconds. The inadequate, and often damaging, response of American business to such adversity proves that we don’t need better crisis management—we need crisis leadership. Ian Mitroff offers a new proactive approach that focuses on doing everything humanly possible to prevent crisis before they happen, rather than merely putting the best possible spin on the aftermath. In easy-to-read, accessible language, Mitroff presents the critical, key lessons that will help managers lead the organization through a major crisis.

Disaster Response and Homeland Security: What Works, What Doesn't

Disaster Response and Homeland Security: What Works, What Doesn't

James F. Miskel

Hurricane Katrina is the latest in a series of major disasters that were not well managed, but it is not likely to be the last, especially if we don't make some improvements in our disaster relief and response system. At the federal level, a single agency, FEMA--now under the Department of Homeland Security--has been charged with the responsibility for coordinating the activities of various federal agencies that have a role in disaster relief. A successful disaster response requires three things: timely and effective coordination between state and federal governments; effective coordination among the federal agencies; and effective coordination between and among state and local government agencies. Miskel, a former Deputy Assistant Associate Director of FEMA, examines the effects that operational failures after Hurricanes Agnes, Hugo, Andrew, and Katrina have had on our disaster response program. He also discusses the impact of 9/11 and the evolving role of the military, and he identifies reforms that should be implemented to improve the nation's ability to respond in the future.

The current threat environment requires greater engagement with the public, as the necessary eyes and ears of the nation's homeland security infrastructure. However, to be effective, the public must be equipped with the knowledge of where and why specific locations and activities may be a terrorist target, what is being done to protect those targets, and how they can help. Managing the Unexpected: Resilient Performance in an Age of Uncertainty, 2nd Edition

Karl E. Weick, Kathleen M. Sutcliffe

The unexpected is often dramatic, as with hurricanes or terrorist attacks. Why are some organizations better able than others to maintain function and structure in the face of unanticipated change?

Military Organizations for Homeland Defense and Smaller-Scale Contingencies: A Comparative Approach

Military Organizations for Homeland Defense and Smaller-Scale Contingencies: A Comparative Approach

Kevin D. Stringer

History has often confirmed that it is not superior weapons but superior organizations that are the most effective factor in achieving military success. In light of this consideration, Kevin D. Stringer's new work proposes how the U.S. military can best be restructured to conduct military operations other than war (as they are known in doctrinal terms).. Such reform is central to meeting the demands of homeland defense and smaller-scale contingencies, including nation-building and stability operations. Foreign military formations present models for peace operations, irregular warfare, and other missions, as well as counterterrorism, law enforcement, and border control. The models considered -- drawn from tactical units in Britain, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Norway, Rhodesia, Russia, and Switzerland -- are selected as best practice examples for transforming the U.S. Armed Forces for future missions both at home and abroad.

Negotiating Hostage Crises with the New Terrorists

Negotiating Hostage Crises with the New Terrorists

Adam Dolnik and Keith M. Fitzgerald

This book is about the role of negotiation in resolving terrorist barricade hostage crises. While there are many trained crisis negotiators around the world, almost none of them has ever had contact with a terrorist hostage-taking incident. Further, the entire training program of most hostage negotiators focuses on resolving crises that do not take into consideration issues such as ideology, religion, or the differing sets of strategic objectives and mindsets of ideological hostage takers. This is especially true with regard to the terrorists of the "new" breed, who have become less discriminate, more lethal, and more willing to execute hostages and die during the incident. Further, many of the paradigms and presumptions upon which the contemporary practice of crisis negotiation is based do not reflect the reality of the "new terrorists." The main focus of this book is on the detailed reconstruction and analysis of the two most high-profile cases in recent years, the Moscow theater and the Beslan school hostage crises, with a clear purpose of drawing lessons for hostage negotiation strategies in the future.

North American Homeland Security: Back to Bilateralism?

North American Homeland Security: Back to Bilateralism?

Imtiaz Hussain, Satya R. Pattnayak, and Anil Hira

Did 9/11 revive a North American guns-butter trade-off? Established in the largest administrative overhaul since World War II, the Department of Homeland Security was charged with keeping the United States safe within a wider security community, but confronted the Washington Consensus-based Western Hemisphere free trade movement, beginning with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and extending to the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) in 2003, to materialize a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) compact. Whether 9/11 restrictions impeded these trade-related thrusts or not, embracing neoliberalism permitted Canada and Mexico to pursue their own initiatives, such as proposing free-trade to the US--Canada in 1985, Mexico in 1990, but, as during the Cold War, security imperatives ultimately prevailed.

Overdrive: Managing in Crisis-Filled Times

Overdrive: Managing in Crisis-Filled Times

Michael Silva, Terry McGann

It used to be that crisis was something that only happened to companies in trouble. But in today's turbulent, hotly competitive global marketplace, crisis is a permanent fact of life in every business organization, and the new name of the management game is "crisis management." Now in this groundbreaking book, Michael Silva (Creating Excellence) and Terry McGann tell you exactly what the new rules of the game are, and, more importantly, how to play to win!

* Teaches you practical lessons in how to strategically manage crisis to forge stronger, more competitive companies

* Provides a rational, innovative framework for thinking about and responding to crisis

* Shows you how to leverage the opportunities that crises present for changing the rules of the game and making strategic breakthroughs

* Brings abstract concepts to vivid life with scores of vignettes and case studies from a wide range of industries and dozens of businesses, both large and small

* Based on the authors' years of experience as crisis management consultants to top Fortune 500 companies

Crisis happens only to companies in trouble, it is always somebody's fault, it is always destructive, and a lot of it in an organization indicates an inability to manage crisis effectively . . .right? Wrong! Despite the fact that most executives surveyed claim to spend at least seventy-five percent of their time putting out fires, most businesspeople continue to cling to these and other dangerously outdated myths about crisis. The truth is, in today's ever more chaotic, fiercely competitive global marketplace, crisis is an inescapable fact of life for every business organization—especially the ambitious ones. In fact, many top business thinkers now view crisis as an indispensable catalyst for strategic growth and competitive strength.

Planning for Conflict in the Twenty-First Century

Planning for Conflict in the Twenty-First Century

Brian Hanley

This book aims to serve the military profession, and so the national interest, by helping to generate intelligent reform of how the armed forces train, educate, and promote officers who shape our military strategy and write our war plans. Readers will discover the professional and intellectual improvement that wide reading in the masters of historical narrative offers to them. The first chapter, "Lessons Not Learned," surveys our strategic documents-and their recent applications-and offers criticism and recommendations. The second chapter, "Transformation Ballyhoo," evaluates our current efforts at military transformation and offers an alternative approach to rehabilitating our armed forces. The third chapter, "The Brain of An Army," offers ideas on building a first-rate Joint War College. Chapters four through six focus on military campaigns: France 1940; Stalingrad; North Africa, 1940-43. The theme is that moral and intellectual qualities determine the fate of armies.

Planting Hatred, Sowing Pain: The Psychology of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Planting Hatred, Sowing Pain: The Psychology of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Moises F. Salinas

As renewed hatred pumped the people of Israel and Palestine in summer 2006 fueling a flurry of bombings, kidnappings, and murders, author Moises Salinas continued research and interviews for this book in those nations. In Planting Hatred, Sowing Pain, the psychology professor explains why it often seems this conflict that has been raging more than 70 years is illogical. While in recent years both groups have basically agreed on the broad parameters of a peace agreement, the fight still continues. Salinas argues that the obstacles to achieving a solution are not just political, but also psychological. He shows that just as disagreements over borders, refugees, and settlements keep the parties from the negotiating table, so do psychological factors including mistrust, hatred, stereotypes, and prejudice.

Preventing Family Violence

Preventing Family Violence

Kevin D. Browne, Martin Herbert

Some families are dangerous environments. Most practitioners in social work, child protection, and hospital and community medicine, as well as the police, will know from their professional experience the extent of spouse abuse, child abuse, sibling violence and maltreatment of the elderly within the family setting. Understanding family violence is the first step towards prevention. This book deals with the nature and causes of abuse within the family, with its prediction and assessment, and with methods for intervention and prevention. Reflecting the research evidence of cycles of violence and maltreatment, the book is organized as a progressive analysis of abuse of spouses, children, siblings, parents and family elders. The authors are both well known for their academic and professional work with families, and have written this book for professionals requiring a research- and evidence-based (rather than anecdotal) guide to the problems of family violence and to the best practice in related intervention work with families and couples.

Protecting Your Business in a Pandemic: Plans, Tools, and Advice for Maintaining Business Continuity

Protecting Your Business in a Pandemic: Plans, Tools, and Advice for Maintaining Business Continuity

Geary W. Sikich

A pandemic is an epidemic that covers a huge swath of the country or even the world. And it's just as scary as it sounds: For example, it's estimated that up to a third of the U.S. population could fall ill in an Avian flu pandemic, costing the U.S. economy alone up to $675 billion. Worse, pandemics shatter lives and businesses and tend to rock society to its foundations. But humanity has been through pandemics before. As disaster-management and business-continuity expert Geary Sikich shows in this book, there are ways to make the best of a bad situation. These methods improve the chance that businesses will remain resilient, and people healthy, employed, and productive--even in the darkest days of an international disaster.

Risk, Crisis and Security Management

Edward Borodzicz

This book has two aims. First, to consider how risk, crisis and security, may be linked in an organisational context. Second, to review the role of, simulation and gaming in responding to these phenomena. Historically, risk has been an established concept of academic interest for some time in both the pure and social sciences. Risk however, remains a subject of intense social and political controversy. How we manage risk appears to dominate every debate from providing social services such as health, transport and public safety to the regulation of corporate activity. Debates about the theory and practice of security management are less developed. This book will inform the debate by considering the relationships between risk and security.

Soldier's Heart: Close-up Today with PTSD in Vietnam Veterans

Soldier's Heart: Close-up Today with PTSD in Vietnam Veterans

William Schroder and Ronald Dawe

Living in the shadowy interior of the brain's limbic system and invisible to the untrained eye, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can not only torture its victims for a lifetime, but reaches beyond victims to negatively influence family members and loved ones. Soldier's Heart, titled after one of the early names for PTSD, delves into the lives of otherwise "normal" American veterans who, seemingly for no reason, display lasting patterns of bad choices and erratic, self-destructive behavior. Analysis of the life portraits of combat veterans brings the myriad symptoms of PTSD to light, equipping the lay reader to recognize the disorder and gain a thorough understanding that can be the foundation for steps to facilitate healing. Four men and one woman who served in Vietnam describe how PTSD still tears at their lives 30 years later. The symptoms of PTSD are conveyed in non-technical language by the veterans featured in this absorbing work, presented by authors Schroder and Dawe, both Vietnam veterans and, respectively, now a writer-businessman and a mental health counselor.

In this book the author explores the concept of a damaged child, and asks what are the different types of injury, ranging from active to passive, physical to emotional, that stop children from reaching their full potential psychologically and physically? The author questions whether emotional damage to a child can be repaired.

The Psychology of Genocide, Massacres, and Extreme Violence:Why "Normal" People Come to Commit Atrocities

The Psychology of Genocide, Massacres, and Extreme Violence:Why "Normal" People Come to Commit Atrocities

Donald G. Dutton

Chronicling horrific events that brought the 20th century to witness the largest number of systematic slaughters of human beings in any century across history, this work goes beyond historic details and examines contemporary psychological means that leaders use to convince individuals to commit horrific acts in the name of a politial or military cause. Massacres in Nanking, Rwanda, El Salvador, Vietnam, and other countries are reviewed in chilling detail. But the core issue is what psychological forces are behind large- scale killing; what psychology can be used to indoctrinate normal people with a Groupthink that moves individuals to mass murder brutally and without regret, even when the victims are innocent children. Dutton shows us how individuals are convinced to commit such sadistic acts, often preceded by torture, after being indoctrinated with beliefs that the target victims are unjust, inhuman or "viral," like a virus that must be destroyed or it will destroy society.

Find out in this riveting exploration of a personality disorder usually dismissed by the mental health profession, and never before the topic of in-depth scholarly exploration. We all recognize the true, full-blown psychopaths--the Hitlers, Stalins and Gacys of the world. The Three U.S.-Mexico Border Wars: Drugs, Immigration, and Homeland Security

The Three U.S.-Mexico Border Wars: Drugs, Immigration, and Homeland Security

Tony Payan

As the United States' response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, begins to take its final shape, perhaps the most affected area of the country is the U.S. borderlands with Mexico. The optimistic talk of the 1990s regarding trade, investment, and economic integration in North America has given way to a rhetoric focused on security, particularly securing and controlling all points of entry to and exit from the United States. Cities and towns across the Southwestern border have experienced firsthand the consequences of the new, security-oriented national ethos and practices embodied in the Homeland Security Act of 2002. The comprehensive security strategy now in place permeates the three border wars examined in this insightful work--the war on drugs, the war over the enforcement of immigration laws, and the war on terror. As Payan demonstrates, the effects of these three wars have been significant. They include a loss of local autonomy and a disconnect between the priorities of Washington, D.C., and the local populations. Perhaps more important, they have created a rigid international line that represents a barrier to economic, social, and cultural integration--and a source of fear and suspicion between neighbors.

The Trauma of Psychological Torture

The Trauma of Psychological Torture

Edited by Almerindo E. Ojeda

It is, in some circles, called "No-Touch Torture." Yet it brings pain and damage that can last a lifetime. Psychological torture techniques--which have a history of use by U.S. forces globally trailing far into the past beyond Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib--include a variety of methods from mock executions, severe humiliation, and mind-altering drugs, to forced, self-induced pain, sensory disorientation including loud music and light control, and exploitation of personal or cultural phobias. These techniques are not surprising if one has fair knowledge of the U.S. history of sanctioned psychological torture techniques, say the experts behind this book. Having reached a joint crescendo of intolerance and horror, scholars from across the nation met in 2006 for a conference on psychological torture and what can be done to stop the practice. They agree with Alberto Mora, the U.S. Navy's general counsel, who fought to stop the Pentagon-sanctioned psychological torture at Guantanamo. "Cruelty disfigures our national character. Where cruelty exists, law does not," Mora said. This book is the joint effort of those scholars, to paint a detailed picture for the public of psychological torture and spur action to stop the practice.

It is known that exposure to stressful and traumatic events can have severe and chronic psychological consequences. Blending these two areas of research and exploring the relevance of positive psychology to trauma practice, Trauma, Recovery, and Growth: Positive Psychological Perspectives on Posttraumatic Stress provides clinicians with the resources they need to implement positive psychology interventions in their trauma treatment across a spectrum of?therapeutic perspectives, including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, humanistic, existential, and group therapies.

Trauma: Culture, Meaning and Philosophy

Trauma: Culture, Meaning and Philosophy

Patrick Bracken

In the past twenty years there has been a remarkable growth of interest in the area of trauma within the disciplines of psychology and psychiatry. This professional interest both reflects and contributes to a wider cultural concern with trauma. The syndrome of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) lies at the heart of the current discourse on trauma. This book argues that there are serious problems inherent in current conceptualisations of how people react to trauma, and consequently in many of the therapeutic responses that have been developed. The book offers a radical critique of the concept of PTSD and questions the assumptions which underpin the 'trauma industry' that has emerged around it. However, the book is not just about critique. Drawing on anthropology, philosophy and his own clinical experience and that of others, the author presents a very different understanding of the relationships between trauma, meaning and culture. Post traumatic anxiety is presented as a problem with strong social and cultural dimensions and not simply an issue of individual psychopathology. Thus the reader is equipped with a new framework for helping traumatised individuals and communities.

Truth, Lies, and Public Health: How We Are Affected When Science and Politics Collide

Madelon Lubin Finkel

The "politicalization" of research findings has become prevalent over the past two decades. Politics often prevents the implementation of policy supported by irrefutable science. Most of us understand something about how this is happening with stem cell research, but Cornell's Madelon Finkel delves deep into the subject to make the issues clear, also revealing how ideology and politics are distorting, diminishing and destroying scientific research results regarding topics from needle exchange, HIV/AIDS prevention and medical marijuana to antiobiotic use with animals later marketed for human consumption.
